Do Prop Firms Pay a Salary?

Most prop firms don’t pay salaries. They operate on profit-sharing models where you only earn when you trade profitably.

CTI’s VIP Gold tier is the exception. Qualified traders can receive a guaranteed monthly salary for 12 months on top of 100% profit share.

This isn’t entry-level. You reach Gold by proving consistent profitability over months, not days. It’s designed for elite traders who’ve already scaled significantly.

Two paths to get there: Instant Funding or Challenge programs. Both lead to the same VIP progression (Bronze → Silver → Gold).

Prop Firm Monthly Salary: Do They Exist?

Can you actually get a salary from a prop firm, or is that just marketing noise?

Most traders assume all prop income is performance-based, and they’re mostly right. The standard prop firm model operates on a profit-sharing basis: you trade, you win, and you receive a percentage of the profits.

No trading profits means no income. That’s how 99% of firms operate, and it’s been that way since the prop trading industry began.

But there’s an exception, and it’s not widely advertised.

At City Traders Imperium, our VIP Gold tier offers something almost no other prop firm does: a guaranteed monthly salary for 12 months, paid on top of your 100% profit share.

It’s not a marketing hook. It’s not available to new traders. And it’s not easy to reach.

This article explains how prop firm compensation actually works, why salaries are nearly impossible to find in this industry, and how our Gold tier changes the equation for traders who’ve proven themselves over the long term.

How Prop Firm Compensation Usually Works

If you’ve researched prop trading, you already know the basic model. But it’s worth breaking down exactly why most firms don’t (and can’t) pay salaries.

The Standard Model: Profit Sharing Only

In a traditional prop firm setup, you’re not an employee. You’re an independent trader operating under a profit-sharing agreement.

Here’s how it works:

  • The firm provides you with simulated trading capital.
  • You trade that capital under specific risk management rules.
  • You keep a percentage of any profits you generate (typically 70-90%).
  • The firm keeps the rest to cover operational costs and profit.
  • If you don’t trade profitably, you earn nothing.

There’s no hourly wage. No base salary. No guaranteed income. Your earnings are entirely tied to your ability to generate consistent profits within the firm’s drawdown limits.

Why Prop Firms Don’t Typically Pay Salaries

The reason is straightforward: economics.

Prop firms operate on relatively thin margins. They make money from challenge fees (most traders fail evaluations and don’t get refunds), spreads, and commissions on trading activity, and their share of profits from successful funded traders.

Paying guaranteed salaries to traders, especially traders who might not be actively profitable during that period, would destroy the unit economics of most firms. They’d be paying out cash with no corresponding revenue to offset it.

Additionally, prop firms aren’t employers. Legally and operationally, they’re capital providers or profit-sharing partners.

Funded traders are independent contractors, not employees on payroll. This structure keeps costs low and allows firms to scale without taking on the liabilities that come with traditional employment.

What “Trader Salary” Usually Means

You’ll occasionally see prop firms advertise “trader salary potential” or “earn a six-figure income.” What they’re actually showing you is projected profit-share earnings based on hypothetical performance.

For example, if you manage a $100,000 account, generate 10% returns per month, and keep 80% of profits, you’d theoretically earn $8,000 monthly. Over the course of a year, that’s $96,000. That’s the “salary” they’re referencing.

The Exception: CTI’s VIP Gold Monthly Salary

At City Traders Imperium, we’ve been funding traders since 2018. Over those years, we’ve watched thousands of traders progress through our programs.

And there’s a small group, the ones who treat trading like a professional operation, who scale to significant capital and maintain consistent profitability for years.

It’s that last group we built the VIP Gold tier for.

What Gold Tier Actually Offers

At the highest level of our VIP program, Gold Tier, qualified traders receive:

Guaranteed monthly salary for 12 months
This isn’t profit share. It’s a fixed monthly income deposited into your account regardless of your trading performance during that period. You could have a breakeven month and still receive your salary.

100% profit share continues
You still keep every dollar you make from trading. The salary is on top of your trading income, not instead of it.

Personalized contract
The salary amount and terms are negotiated based on your track record, account size, trading style, and consistency metrics. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all arrangement. We tailor it to reflect your proven performance.

Institutional-level trading conditions
Gold traders get access to better execution, custom risk parameters, and funding structures that reflect their elite status. You’re no longer operating under standard retail-style rules.

✔  All other VIP benefits continue
On-demand payouts, 100% profit share (even before the salary is factored in), priority support, performance coaching, and everything else you unlocked at Bronze and Silver stays active.

Why This Exists

We didn’t create the Gold tier as a marketing gimmick. We built it as a retention and development tool for elite traders.

The Gold tier is our way of saying, “Stay with us. We’ll guarantee your baseline income, you keep trading and scaling, and we both benefit.”

What Gold Status Actually Means

This isn’t a participation trophy. Gold traders have:

  • Maintained Silver status for at least 4 months.
  • Processed at least 4 additional profitable payout cycles on top of Silver requirements (12 total across all tiers).
  • Averaged at least 2% profit per payout period.
  • Demonstrated consistency, discipline, and risk management over an extended timeframe.
  • Proven they can handle significant capital without letting ego or fear derail their strategy.

Gold isn’t something you aim for in your first month. It’s something you earn after proving yourself repeatedly at Bronze and Silver first. By the time you reach Gold, you’ve been consistently profitable for a full year. That’s the level of performance required.

How to Reach VIP Gold (And the Tiers Before It)

Our VIP program has three tiers: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. You can’t skip ahead; you have to earn your way through by demonstrating consistent profitability over time.

The Progression Path

Bronze Tier requires 4 months of funded trading with no breaches, 4 processed payouts, and at least 4% profit per payout. You unlock 90% profit share and weekly payouts.

Silver Tier requires 4 more months at Bronze, 4 additional payouts with 3% profit each, and reaching max allocation for your program. You unlock 100% profit share and on-demand payouts.

Gold Tier requires 4 additional months at Silver, 4 more payouts with 2% profit each, and continued consistency. You unlock the guaranteed monthly salary on top of everything else.

Total timeline: 12+ months of proven, consistent profitability.

For a complete breakdown of VIP requirements and benefits at each tier, see our VIP Program Details.

You can reach VIP status through either:

Challenge Programs (1-Step or 2-Step): Lower entry cost, prove yourself through evaluation, scale to $400K max.

Instant Funding (Regular or Pro): Higher upfront cost, skip evaluation, scale to $4M max.

Both paths lead to the same VIP tiers and the same Gold salary opportunity. Which route you take depends on your experience and goals, but the destination is identical.

Why Almost No Other Prop Firm Offers This

If guaranteed salaries sound appealing, you might be wondering: why doesn’t every prop firm do this?

The answer is simple: most can’t afford to.

The Business Model Doesn’t Support It

Prop firms operate on relatively thin margins. Revenue comes from challenge fees (the majority of traders fail and forfeit their entry cost), trading commissions and spreads, and profit share from successful traders.

Paying guaranteed salaries, especially to traders who might not be actively profitable during that contract period, would sink most firms financially.

The math doesn’t work unless you have a large, stable base of funded traders and years of operational history to prove you can weather market downturns.

Most prop firms launched in the last 2-3 years. They don’t have the infrastructure, capital reserves, or trader retention rates to support guaranteed salary structures.

We’ve Built the Infrastructure to Support It

City Traders Imperium has been operating since 2018, longer than the vast majority of prop firms currently in the market. Over those years, we’ve:

  • Built sustainable business models that support elite trader retention.
  • Developed institutional relationships and back-end infrastructure.
  • Proven we can weather market cycles, regulatory changes, and competitive pressure.
  • Accumulated enough operational history to know which traders are worth investing in long-term.

Offering salaries at Gold tier isn’t reckless. It’s strategic. We’re investing in traders who’ve already proven they’re worth it.

By the time someone reaches Gold, they’ve generated significant profits for themselves and for us. Paying them a salary to stay is just good business.

It’s a Retention Tool, Not a Recruitment Gimmick

Notice that we don’t advertise “Get a salary!” on our homepage or in our challenge marketing. We don’t use it as a recruitment hook for beginners.

Gold-tier salary is a reward for traders who’ve already spent a year proving consistency. It’s not designed to attract new sign-ups. It’s designed to retain elite traders who might otherwise leave for institutional roles or outside capital.

This is the opposite of firms that promise easy money upfront to get you to buy a challenge. We make you earn it over 12+ months, then we actually pay you.

The Competitive Moat

By offering something no other firm does, we attract and retain the exact traders who are most likely to succeed long term: experienced, disciplined, patient, and focused on consistency over quick wins.

If you’re the kind of trader who can reach Gold, you’re also the kind of trader we want funding indefinitely. The salary structure aligns our incentives with yours. We both win when you stay consistent and continue to scale.

Is It Worth Pursuing?

If you’re brand new to trading or prop firms, don’t fixate on Gold as your immediate goal. You’ll burn out or blow up trying to force it.

Focus on getting funded first. Then focus on staying funded for 4 months and reaching Bronze. Build the habits and skills that make long-term consistency possible. Let the tiers come naturally as a result of doing the work correctly.

But if you’re already consistent, already scaling, and already treating this like a business? Gold tier, and the salary that comes with it, is a realistic target worth building toward.

It takes a year of disciplined, profitable trading to get there. But once you do, you’re not just a funded trader anymore. You’re a professional with guaranteed income, institutional-level conditions, and the financial stability to trade without stress.

Salary-Paying Prop Firms Exist, But You Have to Earn It

So, do prop firms with monthly salaries exist?

Yes, but only one, and only at the top.

Ready to start the path?

Most prop firms ask you to prove yourself and then send you on your way.

At CTI, we ask you to prove yourself, then we pay you to stay.

FAQs

Do prop firms pay salaries?

Not typically. Most prop firms operate on profit-sharing models only. Our VIP Gold tier is the rare exception, offering a 12-month guaranteed monthly salary to elite traders who qualify.

What is the monthly salary for the Gold tier?

The amount is personalized based on your performance history, account size, and trading metrics. It’s negotiated in a custom contract, not a standardized amount that applies to everyone.

Can I apply directly for Gold tier?

No. You must progress through Bronze and Silver first. Gold requires 12+ months of proven consistent profitability across multiple payout cycles. There’s no way to skip the progression.

Does the salary replace my profit share?

No. You receive the salary on top of your 100% profit share. You still keep all your trading profits while also receiving a guaranteed monthly income. They stack; they don’t replace each other.

Is VIP status available with both Instant Funding and Challenges?

Yes. Both funding paths (Instant Funding and 1-Step/2-Step Challenges) qualify for the same VIP progression. Your tier is based on performance and consistency, not which program you started with.
