EAs on CTI’s 1-Step Challenge: What’s Allowed, What’s Not, and How to Win

➔ Expert Advisors (EAs) are fully allowed on City Traders Imperium’s 1-Step Challenge, including personal, commercial, and third-party bots.

Martingale, news trading, overnight holds, and VPS/VPN setups are all permitted.

At City Traders Imperium, we know that traders use many different styles and tools to succeed. Some rely entirely on their own discretion, while others prefer automation through Expert Advisors (EAs) or a mix of both.

The goal of allowing EAs on CTI 1-Step Challenge is to give every trader a clear, fair, and flexible path to funding, no matter how they trade.

This guide explains exactly how EA usage works in the 1-Step Challenge, what’s allowed, what’s not, and how to make the most of our rules and payout structure.

Why This Matters

Automation is part of modern trading, yet many prop firms still treat it cautiously. Some restrict EAs to a few narrow cases, while others use vague rules that leave traders guessing what is and isn’t allowed. That uncertainty can make it hard to plan or grow an automated strategy.

We believe traders should be able to use the tools that work best for them. Some prefer manual execution, others rely on EAs, and many combine both. Our approach is to make sure each style fits naturally into our funding programs.

EA usage is clearly defined across all CTI challenges, and while each model has its own risk parameters, the philosophy is the same: if a strategy is responsible and within the rules, it is welcome here.

The 1-Step Challenge is a good example of that philosophy in action. You can use your own or third-party EAs, trade around the clock, and even test higher-risk models such as martingale or grid systems if you apply proper risk management.

The difference isn’t that we have looser rules; it’s that we actually tell you what the rules are. This matters because unclear policies will just waste your time. You pay the challenge fee, spend weeks optimizing your EA, pass the evaluation, and then get flagged for something that was never spelled out in the terms.

With CTI, you get specific guardrails: You can use any EA, whether you developed personally or bought online, but not share your EA with other traders, and stay within your 5% trailing drawdown.

The practical upside? You can actually build a strategy around known rules.

Also, with the use of EA at CTI, you can also use a VPS to run your EA as long as you’re not device-hopping like you’re dodging surveillance.

When the rules are clear, you stop stressing and second-guessing every trade and start focusing on making money.

How the 1-Step Challenge Works

The 1-Step Challenge is built for simplicity. There is only one stage between you and a funded account.

Requirements

Details

Profit Target

8% of your starting balance

Max Trailing Drawdown

5 %

Daily Drawdown

None

Minimum Profitable Days

3 calendar days in profit during the challenge

Time Limit

Unlimited – take as long as you need

What’s Allowed

News trading, overnight holds, weekend positions, personal or third-party EAs, martingale strategies.

After You Pass

Once you hit that 8% target with your three profitable days, you transition to a funded account. The 5% trailing drawdown stays in place. Your profit share starts at 80%

The profit share increases as you move up CTI’s VIP tiers. Bronze gets you to 90%. Silver gets you to 100%, meaning you keep everything you make. Gold adds further perks. We’ll talk to you privately about eligibility for this tier.

Account Fees and Refunds

The 1-Step Challenge offers seven account sizes and uses a one-time refundable fee. Once you pass and complete your first payout, we refund the challenge cost in full.

What the Math Looks Like

Let’s say you’re running a $50,000 account. You paid $269 upfront. Here’s what you actually take home at different profit levels.

    • At 2% profit ($1,000) → $800 payout at 80% + $269 fee refund = $1,069 to trader.
    • At 5% profit ($2,500) → $2,000 payout; with refund, $2,269.
    • At 8% profit ($4,000) → $3,200 payout; with refund, $3,469.

How Payouts, Stop-Losses, and Platforms Actually Work

Payout Timing

Your first payout is available on demand once you hit two milestones:

    • At least 7 profitable trading days.
    • At least 2% net profit (or $100, whichever is higher) .

This matters because you don’t have to wait until you hit the full 8% target to access capital. Hit 2% after 7 profitable trading days, and you can request a payout. You’ll get your 80% share plus the fee refund (if applicable), and you keep trading toward the full pass.

After that first payout, you’re on a monthly cycle. Payouts happen during the last 5 days of each month. Bronze VIP traders get weekly payouts. Silver VIP traders can request payouts anytime.

The Stop-Loss Rule

Every trade needs a stop-loss within 60 seconds of opening in order to protect your account from excessive losses.

Fun Fact: According to historical data, 95.68% of traders/EAs who trade without a stop loss end up losing their account within the first month of trading.

Here’s what that means in practice:

    • Your EA needs to place the stop-loss automatically when it opens a position.
    • Stealth stop-losses don’t count – the platform has to see the SL order.
    • If the system doesn’t detect a stop-loss after 1 minute, it may auto-close your trade.

VPS Usage with EAs

VPS and VPN usage is allowed. Most algorithmic traders run their EAs on a VPS for uptime and latency anyway, so this isn’t an issue.

However, if you’re planning to use 2 devices with a VPS, please contact our support team for approval.

Platform Options

CTI offers two platforms depending on where you’re located:

MT5 (MetaTrader 5) – Available for non-U.S. traders

    • Standard platform for algorithmic trading.
    • Full MQL5 EA support.
    • If your bot is built for MT5, this is your route.

Match-Trader – Required for U.S.-based traders

    • Different platform architecture.
    • If your EA is MQL5-based, you’ll need to confirm compatibility with CTI support.
    • Adaptation may be required.

If you’re in the U.S. and your entire strategy relies on an MQL5 EA, talk to CTI before paying the challenge fee. Match-Trader might support your setup, or it might not. Better to know upfront.

What Gets You Flagged

We are explicitly clear about what crosses the line:

High-frequency trading (HFT) – Mass data entry or infrastructure exploitation isn’t allowed. Trading frequently is fine. Trying to front-run the broker’s feed is not.

Latency or error exploitation – If your EA is designed to profit from broker delays or pricing errors, that’s prohibited.

Gap trading near market closures – Strategies that specifically target gaps around open/close times are flagged as manipulative.

Manipulative patterns – Anything that looks like you’re gaming the system rather than trading will get reviewed. If it’s questionable, it probably violates the terms.

⚠️The common thread: trade legitimately and you’re fine.

Support and Coaching for EA Traders

At CTI, we include account analytics, performance dashboards, and trader tools with every account. We also offer performance coaching, which gets more frequent as you move up the VIP tiers.

If you’re running an EA, you might think coaching is irrelevant. You’ve got a bot – what’s a coach going to tell you?

More than you’d expect.

Why EA traders benefit from coaching:

Objective risk metric reviews – A coach can spot when your drawdown patterns suggest your EA is over-leveraged or your profitable trading days aren’t consistent enough to scale. You’re looking at code and backtest results. They’re looking at actual account behavior.

Strategy drift detection – Your EA might perform perfectly in backtests and then start behaving differently live. A coach reviewing your metrics can flag when something’s off before you blow through your trailing drawdown.

Compliance guidance – If your trading patterns are starting to look like they might trigger a review, coaching can catch it early. Better to adjust your EA settings now than get flagged later.

Parameter optimization feedback – You can over-optimize an EA into oblivion. A coach who’s seen hundreds of accounts can tell you when your tweaks are making things worse, not better.

It’s not hand-holding. It’s pattern recognition from someone who’s seen what works and what doesn’t across a lot of traders. If your EA is solid and your metrics are clean, coaching confirms that. If something’s drifting, you catch it before it becomes a problem.

Who Benefits Most

You’ll know pretty quickly if CTI’s 1-Step fits your trading style. These profiles cover the traders who tend to get the most value out of the program.

MT5 EA Developer

You build and test MQL5 bots. You need a prop firm that won’t flag you for news trading or weekend holds, and you want the stop-loss rule spelled out clearly. CTI’s 1-Step gives you that transparency. No guessing, no surprise violations.

Discretionary Trader with EA Risk Manager

You make entries manually, but let an EA Risk Manager handle your stop-losses, take-profits, and trailing stops. You can use an EA Risk Manager on all CTI Funding Programs with no issues. Portfolio Copier (Own Accounts)

You’re managing multiple CTI accounts and copying trades across your own portfolio. CTI allows personal multi-account copying, so you can scale your strategy without policy violations.

Just don’t share your EA with other traders and don’t copy trade from other traders or signal providers, as CTI is looking for traders who are independent thinkers who can thrive with their own effort. And that’s where the line gets drawn.

U.S.-Based Systematic Trader

You’re in the U.S., which means Match-Trader instead of MT5. Before you commit, confirm your EA works on Match-Trader or can be adapted. Talk to CTI support about automation compatibility. It might work fine, or you might need workarounds.

Formerly Flagged Elsewhere

You’ve been burned by vague EA policies at other firms. Maybe they banned your bot without explanation, or you passed an evaluation and then got flagged during payouts. CTI’s explicit allowances and transparent rules give you a clearer path forward.

FAQs

Do I need to own the EA?

For the 1-Step Challenge, no. Third-party EAs are permitted without requiring proof of ownership. This is different from our 2-Step and Instant Funding programs, which do require ownership documentation.

That said, if there’s any ambiguity about your specific setup, confirm with CTI support before starting the challenge.

Is martingale banned?

Martingale is explicitly allowed on the 1-Step Challenge. You still need to respect stop-loss and drawdown rules, but the strategy itself isn’t prohibited.

Can I share or rent my EA to others?

No. CTI prohibits sharing the same EA with other traders.

Not allowed:

    • Renting your EA to other CTI traders.
    • Using a signals marketplace where you copy other traders’ EAs.
    • Running your EA on someone else’s CTI account.

Allowed:

    • Running your EA across multiple CTI accounts that you personally manage.
    • Copying trades between your own accounts.

If you manage multiple CTI accounts and your EA places trades across all of them, that’s fine. If you’re giving access to your EA so someone else can trade with it, that violates the copy-trading policy.

Are VPS and VPN usage allowed?

Yes. You can run your EA on a VPS or connect through a VPN for stability and security. You may use up to two devices simultaneously. If you travel frequently or change IPs often, let us know so our compliance team can whitelist your access.
